The Harvard Environmental Law Review is published two times per year. We accept manuscripts for the print issues twice per year and make offers for publication on a rolling basis; there is no formal deadline for publication in a given issue. For our Fall issue, we typically start reviewing submissions for publication in the preceding February and fill the issue by April. For our Spring issue, we typically start reviewing submissions in the preceding July and fill the issue by October. Scholastica submission is strongly preferred, but submissions may also be sent to hlselrsubmit@gmail.com.
We welcome scholarship on issues of national and international scope and importance related to environmental law.
For current law students who will not graduate by August 1st, 2025: Please note that HELR does not review submissions from current non-Harvard J.D. or LL.M. students.
Length limits
HELR gives preference to articles under over 15,000 words in length and under 25,000 words in length, including text and footnotes. HELR does not publish articles exceeding 35,000 words except in extraordinary circumstances.
We accept shorter submissions for online publication year-round. Submissions for online publication should be sent to hlselrsubmit@gmail.com.
Citation Format
Citations in all submitted articles should conform to the latest edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.
